About Us

The Company was formed in 1948 by a dozen or so enthusiasts, most of whom had some experience on the amateur stage, and was originally called The Little Theatre Club.

The original intention was to present shows in a modest way for charities, but within a few months it was learned that, owing to a cancelled booking, it was possible to hire the Palace Theatre, Westcliff, for a week. And so, in December 1949 the first LTC production was staged – “No No Nanette”. Since then, the company has presented over 150 productions.
Little Theatre Company celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2019, and with a reputation for bold staging and award-winning performances it’s no wonder many alumni have gone on to forge successful careers in theatre and entertainment, including company president Gemma Craven, actor and presenter Lee Mead, Mark Cotgrove aka jazz musician Snowboy, and Hana Stewart who is currently starring in West End musical ‘Six’.

Little Theatre Company is fundraising in partnership with Equal People Performing Arts (EPPA); a fully inclusive performing arts centre with an ethos to provide a safe and dignified space where disabled and non-disabled children and adults can work together in all aspects of the performing arts.

Made in Dagenham Made in Dagenham is drawn from the real-life 1968 sewing machinists strike at the Ford factory in Dagenham, Essex. This strike was influential in the passing of the Equal Pay Act of 1970. The musical focuses on the leader of the strike, Rita O’Grady, as she encourages the women of the Ford factory to walk out after they are re-classified as unskilled workers, while their male counterparts see their wages increase. After Rita is patronized and snubbed by the factory at a union meeting, the women’s grievances over their worker status turn into a fight for equal pay. Determined not to be treated like the poor relation, the women vote unanimously to strike and encourage the women at the Liverpool factory to strike also. However when the American bosses fly in and lay off 5,000 men as a result, including Rita’s husband Eddie, cracks begin to show in the women’s solidarity. Risking her marriage and friendships, Rita continues her efforts for equality and gives a rousing speech at a televised Trade Union Conference , leading to the passing of equal pay within the union. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

LTC Jr

They Say Never Work With Children or Animals
We Chose Children.

Although Little Theatre Company is an adult society, we often produce shows with child roles. They are often filled by the children of our own members, as well as auditioning children from outside of the LTC family.
Having produced many shows involving children, a group of members decided they wanted to do even more. There was a desire to give more back to the young people who clearly got so much out of performing with us and who support our shows, with a view to helping these youngsters improve their performance skills and boost their confidence.
So, in 2016, LTC Jr was born. Run on an entirely voluntary basis by our own members, it provides a comprehensive, affordable, week-long summer school for children aged 7-17, where we rehearse and perform a full musical in just 7 days!
In addition to this, we also hold social events for our Jrs, such as their Christmas Party, we look to our Jrs first for child roles in our main shows and we invite them to perform with us at events such as our Southend Bandstand performances and at our Christmas Fayre.
The project is extremely popular with most children returning every year and it has been an absolute joy to see them grow, both physically and in terms of their confidence and performance. We started with Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and have gone on to perform Honk Jr, Legally Blonde Jr and Guys & Dolls Jr.
The project has been on hold for the last 2 years, due to COVID restrictions, but we plan to return with a new show in 2022!
Let us know if you have a child who might want to be an LTC Jr.
